VOLUNTEERING AT THE KILNS

Traditionally a group of volunteers comes to Wytham Woods twice a year to help the Conservator and the foresters by working on the gates, fences and  other woodland tasks that need doing but which otherwise would probably not get done.  By contrast, the Oxford Anagama (Japanese Kiln) Project at Wytham Woods needs volunteers for all aspects of running the two traditional kilns.
During times when we are firing the kilns, we need teams of volunteers to work in shifts with more experienced project members in the round-the-clock care that firing requires.  In the run up to firing, we need help preparing the site, stacking firewood, loading and documenting the pots that are to go into the kiln, and in all aspects of the administration that this project requires.
No-one working on the project is paid to do so.  Everyone is a volunteer. Some but not all are practicing potters, and for others it is a hobby. Another group of people, interested more in the process than the product, just like sitting round a large fire at night talking, and feeding the flames. Everyone is welcome.

If you would like to volunteer, contact the Project Director by email: robin.wilson@admin.ox.ac.uk
