Bookbinding Materials and examples of the craft at the beginning of the first day |
We ran a full programme of bookbinding and printmaking courses at our Strawbale Gallery in Duns Tew, Oxfordshire this year. The picture above shows the gallery set up ready for the arrival of the students on the first day of the September Course.
Fortunately the studio didn't remain so neat and tidy once we started work. All the tools we need are placed on the cutting mat in front of the picture, and on the far side of the table are some examples of our own and other binders' craft. We show examples from the Kelmscott Press, the Whittington Press, from the printer Guido Morris and from a broad range of modern fine binderies and independent presses. None of our students this year had had any previous bookbinding experience but by the end of each course each student had single-handedly produced a case-bound hard-backed book of their own design.
If you are interested in learning how to bind books or to learn printmaking, whether you have no experience at all, or just want to improve on what you already know, do feel free to contact us and ask about the forthcoming courses. A weekend course is usually £180, which includes lunch and all the tools and materials you will need.
