Percival, the Scilly Crab was in life a giant of his kind, in death a fine lunch, and to his deathless memory, it felt meet and proper to commemorate him in a multi-block linocut. This is the first of a new series of our works, which we intend to undertake through the autumn and winter. Though not necessarily all on lunch-based topics, the themes will concentrate on developing our competence with handing large multi- coloured images, which we can now produce more reliably using the new flat bed press. The spoons can go back in the cutlery drawer and Percival the crab will rest in peace.
Percival came to us courtesy of Ian, our landlord on St. Martin's, Isles of Scilly, who is by good fortune a Newlyn trawlerman by trade and practice. As well as tasty with pasta, lemon and garlic, Percy was more photogenic than the pollock, turbot and monk, though I do admit that each have their own piscine charms. Percival, along with several other Scilly images will appear in the Cheltenham Gallery from Wednesday this week.
